TABORERS WINTER WARMER (Outline Programme)

FRIDAY 24 to SUNDAY 26 FEB 2023

LOCATIONS ALL AROUND ROTHERHITHE, LONDON SE16 4JE [high D pipe unless indicated low D or G or a consensus agrees to all play an item on G pipe as if D pipe fingering, solos on any pipe]. Steve will bring recording gear to try to get some takes, especially of Kemp’s Jig (Playford, all) and Kemp’s Jig (Lute MS, confident players on low D pipes).

Friday:

School session (year 5) at Ashford, Middlesex (afternoon, requires some G pipe as if D pipe fingering, liaise with Andy Richards if attending).

Meet in the Mayflower Pub from 4:00.

5:30 – 6:30 Tour of the Brunel Museum and Tunnel – with some informal playing.

6:30 Eat in the Ship Inn or or Albion Street cafes for takeaways: Waterhouse (Chinese), Perfetta Pizzeria, Albion Fishbar. We can bring back to outside the Ship for drinks, or tea & coffee in the Bubble.

7:00 – 10:00 Playing session in the Bubble Theatre rehearsal Room, including Playford tunes and Morris tunes in the Saturday rehearsal for parade, also Carol of the Bells (score, midi, videos basic and exciting).

Saturday:

8:30 Breakfast in Watchman Café.

9:00 Bubble open for get in.

10:00 Rehearsal for Parade (Bubble Rehearsal Room), tunes for Pastime – All Taborers Playford (also Confident Taborers Playford), then from 10:40 for all Taborers London Pride Morris tunes, including Room for the Cuckolds [Bucknell], Banbury Bill & Glorishears [Bampton], Kemp’s Jig [Playford into Lute MS]; if time for Confident Taborers Skirmish & Valentine [Fieldtown], & Fool’s Jig [Bampton]. Rehearsal of Death & Resurrection of Punchinello.
(We have the Rehearsal Room from 9:00 to 11:30, and the Studio Space downstairs from 9:00 until 4:00 so can leave stuff there. (A different group has the Rehearsal Room  booked from 11:30 until 4:30).

12:00 Punchinello’s Parade to Norwegian Church (with dancers from Pastime & London Pride Morris).

12:20 – 1:00 Performance in NC Courtyard of Death & Resurrection of Punchinello. Possible repeat in St Mary’s Churchyard Gardens by Watchhouse cafe.

1:00 – 2:00 Lunch (local pubs, cafes or restaurants).

2:00 – 4:00 Performance(s) (London Pride [directed by Squire] dances interspersed with all Taborers playing parade tunes with panache). Location: St Mary’s churchyard gardens (or Bubble Studio (ground floor) if wet.

2:00 – 4:00 Sands Studio: Commedia workshop with Gerry Flannagan, Cheryl Stapleton & John Broadbent: Creating simple scenes and lazzi’s (for possible later performance). Pre-booking essential (via website or email to BT).

4:30 to 7:00 Workshop Session in Bubble Theatre: 4:30 Morris (Andy): Kemp’s Jig [Playford into Lute MS]; Shepherds’ Hey [Bucknell], if time Fool’s Jig [Bampton] & Princess Royal [Lower Swell Longborough]. 5:00 Steve: “Digital – How Can It Help?” 6:00 Gillian on 3/2 taboring Prince George’s Birthday and Shropshire Rounds (Hole in the Wall is another example) . 6:30 “How do you like to Arrange Tune(s)” (Discussion led by Mary-Jo).

4:30 to 7:00 Sands Studio: Open rehearsal of Love & Madness, The Magical Toymaker and other commedia pieces; followed by informal performances by workshop participants. Open to All – pre-booking not necessary.

7:00 Eat in the Ship Inn or Albion Street cafes.

8:00 – 10:00 Bubble Theatre: Workshop Session (Bill): Dance of Death / Cycle of Life – bring ideas of tunes, dance or commedia. Then informal playing session.

Sunday:

9:00 Breakfast in Watchman café

10:00 Rehearsal in the Bubble Theatre (to include Gillian, Bill ( Carol of the Bells (score, midi) and Elizabeth Chilly Chilly Winter on Rounds & Earworms, plus All Taborers Playford, Morris Reprised for IPATF: Shepherds’ Hey [Bucknell], Kemp’s Jig [Playford into Lute MS], if time Fool’s Jig [Bampton].

12:00 Walking tour via Riverside & Kings Park including workshop tunes & Morris Reprised

1:00 — 2:00 Performance in Southwark Park Bandstand

2:00 – 3:00 Lunch in in the Angel pub (where Pepys watched “London’s burning”!)

3:00 – 5:00 Return to Bubble for informal playing session.

3:00 to 4:30 Sands Theatre: Commedia Masterclass with Barry Grantham (Open to All – pre-booking not necessary).

5:00 to 9:00 Sands Theatre: Commedia performances (Open to All – pre-booking not necessary).

5:00 (For those not going to Commedia events in Sands Theatre) Food and drinks in the Ship or Mayflower for final farewells

Please let us know if you are coming. The cost to the Taborers for the weekend is £10 (payable on the door or via the minicommediafest.co.uk website). This covers the hire of the Bubble rehearsal spaces, the Brunel Museum visit (donation optional) and all events at Sands. You can also book for the Commedia Workshops just by emailing BT.
