TABORERS WINTER WARMER (Outline Programme v1g)
9 to 11 Feb 2024 in York for a Winter Warmer:
York would be from the evening of Friday 9th February to early afternoon on Sunday 11th.
Please let us know if you might be interested in meeting on the 9th in Beverley as follows:
The best train is the 10:45 York to Beverley 12:13, grab something to eat and walk to the Minstrels’ Church, St Mary’s, to look round it 1pm and play there 1:30pm to about 1:50pm.
2:15pm tour of the Abbey iconography (which closes at 4pm).
4:26pm train Beverley to York arriving 5:59pm, walk to Black Swan by 18:30.
In York:
Friday 9th February
Our theme is “First Folio Masquerade”, celebrating the generations leading up to, and inspired by, the First Folio. 400 years ago the Winter of 1623 to 24 was warmed by the First Folio, arguably the greatest work of English literature, published seven years after the death of William Shakespeare. Bill suggests it will be fun to dress as someone in the First Folio, with a mask.
7:00 pm – 8:30 pm Playing for 15th Century Italian Dance (Bill and Barbara) in the Black Swan (Marchesana dance music and Vita Di Cholino dance music), followed by Session.
Saturday 10th February
10:00 – 1130 Rehearsal (in St Martin’s “Le Grand”, Coney St), with Arbeau Dancers First Folio Masquerade items including All Taborers Masquerade tunes – Argiers, Branle d’Ecosse, Buffens, Gathering Peascods, Rufty Tufty, Hunt the Squirrel, and Confident Taborers Vita Di Cholino.
11:30 Taborers Parade to Barley Hall (with Arbeau dancers).
12:00 – 1:30 Performance (Barley Hall) (with Arbeau dancers).
1:30 – 2:45 Lunch (local pubs, cafes or restaurants).
2:45 Taborers Parade to St Helen’s Church (with Arbeau dancers).
3:00 – 4:00 Performance(s) with Arbeau dancers interspersed with all Taborers playing parade tunes with panache. Location: St Helen’s Church.
4:30 to 6:00 Workshop Sessions (Black Swan): 4:30 Gez: Brade Masque Tunes. 5:00 Gaby: 3 Part Country Dance Music 5:30 Mark P: The Lyrical Pipe and Tabor.
6:00 Eat in the Black Swan or nearby.
7:00 – 10:00 Black Swan: Workshop Session (Bill): First Folio Masquerade Then informal playing session.
Sunday 11th February
10:00 Rehearsal (St Helen’s Church) including Room for the Cuckolds and Winster Gallop (Andy).
11:00 – 1:00 Walking tour Performances (venues to include Barley Hall and St Helen’s) including workshop tunes.
1:00 – 2:00 Lunch (Black Swan) followed by option to play or final farewells.

Please let us know if you are coming. The cost to the Taborers for the weekend is £15 to cover venue expenses, members of Taborers Society under 21 free.

School session (year 5) at Ashford, Middlesex (afternoon, details to be confirmed, may require some G pipe as if D pipe fingering, liaise with Andy Richards)
Meet in the Mayflower Pub from 4:00
5:30 – 6:30 Tour of the Brunel Museum and Tunnel – with some informal playing
6:30 Eat in the Ship Inn
7:00 – 10:00 Playing session in the Bubble Theatre rehearsal Room
Saturday:
9:00 Breakfast in Watchman Café
10:00 Rehearsal for Parade (St Mary’s Church Hall, tunes for Pastime, then from 11:00 London Pride Morris, including Room for the Cuckolds & Queen’s Jig [Bucknell], Banbury Bill & Glorishears [Bampton], Kemp’s Jig [Lute MS on low Ds into Playford with high Ds]; if time Skirmish & Valentine [Fieldtown], Princess Royal [Lower Swell Longborough] & Fool’s Jig [Bampton].
12:00 Pulchinello’s Parade to Norwegian Church (with dancers from Pastime & London Pride Morris)
12:30 – 1:00 Performance in NC Courtyard
1:00 – 2:00 Lunch (local pubs, cafes or restaurants)
2:00 – 4:00 Performance(s) (London Pride [directed by Squire] plus other keen Winter Warmerers)
4:00 to 6:00 Workshop Sessions in Bubble Theatre: (details to follow, but to include Gillian on 3/2 taboring, plus Morris: Queen’s Jig & Shepherds’ Hey [Bucknell], Kemp’s Jig [Lute MS into Playford], Princess Royal [Lower Swell Longborough]; if time Go and Enlist [Sherborne], Fool’s Jig [Bampton] & Highland Mary [Oddington]).
6:00 Eat in the Ship Inn
7:30 Commedia Show in Sands Studio Theatre (a handful of confident taborers may be invited to perform for opening, broadcast live)
Sunday:
9:00 Breakfast in Watchman café
10:00 Rehearsal in the Bubble Theatre (details to follow, but to include Gillian, Bill and Elizabeth on Rounds & Earworms, plus Morris Reprised for IPATF: Queen’s Jig & Shepherds’ Hey [Bucknell], Kemp’s Jig [Lute MS into Playford], Princess Royal [Lower Swell Longborough]; if time Go and Enlist [Sherborne], Fool’s Jig [Bampton] & Highland Mary [Oddington]).
12:00 Walking tour via Riverside & Kings Park including workshop tunes & Morris Reprised
1:00 — 2:00 Lunch in in the Angel pub (where Pepys watched “London’s burning”!)
2:00 – 3:00 Performance in Southwark Park Bandstand
3:00 – 5:00 Return to Bubble for informal playing session
5:00 — Food and drinks in the Ship or Mayflower for final farewells
