Friday 20th September
Have fun in historic Gloucester 20th to 22nd Sep 2024 at the International Pipe and Tabor Festival with Spanish guest artist Juanma Sánchez. Our main events will be based at or near the Folk in Gloucester ( a wonderful Tudor building near the Cathedral), some accommodation options are here.
On 20th afternoon, assemble from 1pm at the Ed Shed Downstairs at the rear of the Folk in Gloucester.
2 – 5:50 pm Symposium – in the Ed Shed Downstairs at the rear of the Folk in Gloucester
“Anniversaries and Recollections”, it’s the 100th Anniversary of Cecil Sharp’s death and the Travelling Morrice, other anniversaries too, and we can revel in various recollections of pipe and tabor.
6 – 7.20 pm AGM of The Taborers Society (Main Building of the Folk in Gloucester).
7.30 – 10.00 pm Social and informal Session (round the room, “play” or “pass”) with bar and buffet (Main Building of the Folk in Gloucester).
Saturday 21st September
Ed Shed downstairs:
10:00am -10:40 Playing for All Taborers Repertoire including Sumer is Icumen in, Morvan Bourree Set – Up in the Meadow and Morvan, Pasacalles de Phil Day, Hunt the Squirrel – Bill, Bob, Mary-Jo, Gillian, Andy
10:50 – 11:20 Playing for Longborough Morris Hey Diddle Dis – Andy, Taylor’s Morris.
11:30 – 12:00 Quick run through join-in dances in the repertoire – All
At noon, experienced and fit dancers have an hour’s workshop with Taylor’s Morris in the energetic and vigorous Longborough Morris style. Taborers are welcome to watch, look at and discuss instruments, look at the Cathedral with its fine images of taborers, or break for lunch early (The Dick Whittington is a session-friendly pub where you can take food from nearby outlets e.g. the sandwich shop nearby if you buy a drink).
12:00 – 1:00 pm Dance Longborough – Taylor’s Morris, Andy (Ed Shed downstairs).
1:10 – 1:30 pm Set Speed and emphasis for any requested jig dances TBD – Mary-Jo, Andy, any other jig players (Ed Shed downstairs).
1:30 -2:15 pm Lunch at nearby providers (Cafe at the Folk, or The Dick Whittington is a session-friendly pub where you can take food from nearby outlets e.g. the sandwich shop nearby).
2:00 pm Beginners Workshop – Gillian will concentrate on teaching people the basics of technique and then send them away with a selection of tunes suitable for learners so they can work on them afterwards. Approximately an hour. (Ed Shed downstairs).
2:30 pm – 5:00 pm Performances in costume around the historic centre with dancing including Taylor’s Morris (who dance Longborough) and potentially others. If weather OK then 2:30 outside the New Inn, 3:20 the Docks, 4:10 the Cathedral Close not too near the Cathedral.
5:00 – 7:00pm Break for meal (Rob and Gillian to suggest options).
7:00 pm Assemble at concert venue the Folk in Gloucester main building.
7.30 – 10 pm Evening Concert “The Art of Pipe and Tabor” in the Folk in Gloucester main building, with bar.
Sunday 22nd September
Rendez-vous at Ed Shed downstairs.
10:30 – 11:30am El Gioioso – Rosti Boly & Petit Riens: the dance and the music (15th century Italian) (Bill & Barbara). Contingency item: Der Dritte Maschara Old Almain into Toudion.
11:40 – 12:40am Juanma Sanchez will teach taborers a Pasacalles (pdf midi mp3) from his parents’ village.
1:00 pm lunch (Rob and Gillian to suggest a venue) followed by fond farewells.

Performers of dance etc. are free.
