IPATF 2025 Draft Programme

Friday 19th September
Have fun in historic Peterborough 19th to 21st Sep 2025 at the International Pipe and Tabor Festival with French guest artist Benjamin Melia. Our main events will be based near the station and the Cathedral. Accommodation options include the Park Inn (various of us are staying there), the 17th century Bull Hotel, or the Premier Inn City Centre. Email Andy Richards at e-mail if you wish to present a paper or might arrive on 18th for informal meeting up (coordinated via WhatsApp).
On 19th afternoon, assemble from 1pm at <Westgate New Church 68b Westgate Peterborough PE1 1RG>.
2 – 5:30 pm Symposium – in <Westgate New Church>.
“Origins”, it’s the 20th Anniversary of the Taborers Society this November, and we can revel in various pipe and tabor origin stories.
5:40 – 7pm AGM of The Taborers Society in <Westgate New Church>.
7:00 – 8:30pm Break for meal (Ollie to suggest options).
8.30 – 10.00 pm Social and informal Session (round the room, “play” or “pass”) at <Westgate New Church>.
Saturday 20th September
<Westgate New Church>:
10:00am -11:00 Northumbrian tunes talk & workshop – David B.
We will use G pipes for this unless there’s a consensus to use D pipes (some G pipes may be available to borrow, please let us know if you would like one).
We aim for Taborers to perform Sir John Fenwick’s Flower Amang Them All in the concert.
The Northumbrian tunes music is here for D pipe and G pipe.
11:15am -12:00 Playing for All Taborers Repertoire including Sumer is Icumen in, Petit Riens, Morvan Bourree Set – Up in the Meadow and Morvan , Hunt the Squirrel – Gez, Bill, Bob, Mary-Jo, Gillian, Andy
12:10am – 12:50 Playing for Ollie’s dance choices TBD – Ollie, Matt, Peterborough Morris.
12:50 – 1:15, Taborers are welcome to look at and discuss instruments, or break for lunch early perhaps with a look at the Cathedral with its fine history including the funeral of Catherine of Aragon.
1:15 -2:15 pm Lunch at nearby providers (Ollie to suggest options).
2:00 pm Beginners Workshop – Gillian will concentrate on teaching people the basics of technique and then send them away with a selection of tunes suitable for learners so they can work on them afterwards. Approximately an hour. <Westgate New Church>.
2:30 pm – 5:00 pm Performances in costume around the historic centre with dancing including Peterborough Morris and Taborers. If weather OK then 2:30 <Location TBD>, 3:20 <Location TBD>, 4:10 <Location TBD>.
5:00 – 7:00pm Break for meal (Ollie to suggest options).
7:00 pm Assemble at concert venue, St John the Baptist Church.
7.30 – 10 pm Evening Concert “Celebrating Pipe and Tabor” in St John the Baptist Church.
Sunday 21st September
Rendez-vous at <Royce and Clare room, Park Inn, Wentworth Street, Peterborough, PE1 1BA>.
10:30 – 11:30am Dances for a 15th century Tournament: these may include Danse de Cleves and La Franchoise Nouvelle (Brussels), Petit Riens (Guglielmo) and Prenes a Garde (Gresley) (Bill & Barbara).
11:50 – 12:50am Benjamin Melia will teach taborers about music of the Fête-Dieu of Aix-en-Provence.
1:00 pm lunch (Ollie to suggest a venue) followed by fond farewells.

IPATF 2024 Outline Programme
Have fun in historic Gloucester 20th to 22nd Sep 2024 at the International Pipe and Tabor Festival with Spanish guest artist Juanma Sánchez. Our main events will be based at or near the Folk in Gloucester ( a wonderful Tudor building near the Cathedral).
On 20th afternoon, assemble from 1pm, 2pm onwards our Symposium will be on the theme “Anniversaries and Recollections”, it’s the 100th Anniversary of Cecil Sharp’s death and the Travelling Morrice, other anniversaries too, and we can revel in various recollections of pipe and tabor. We are keen to include early photos of taborers and our taborer gatherings if you have any to share, please email Andy Richards at e-mail . There will be a session in the evening.
On 21st we will workshop, then process and perform around the historic centre with dancing including Taylor’s Morris (who dance Longborough) and potentially others. In the evening there will be a Concert at the Folk in Gloucester main building Celebrating Pipe and Tabor, with international artist Juanma Sanchez from Spain.
A Pipe and Tabor Beginners’ Workshop slot on 21st afternoon can be pre-booked by contacting us, Gillian will concentrate on teaching people the basics of technique and then send them away with a selection of tunes suitable for learners so they can work on them afterwards.
There’s more taboring fun on 22nd before fond farewells in the afternoon.
Workshops will include Juanma Sanchez teaching taborers a Pasacalles from his parents’ village, and Bill Tuck and Barbara Segal on El Gioioso – Rosti Boly: the dance and the music (15th century Italian).

INTERNATIONAL PIPE AND TABOR FESTIVAL 2023 – OUTLINE PROGRAMME v1a

Have fun taboring in the historic centre of Grantham 15th – 17th September 2023, centred on Grantham House and St Wulfram’s Church, before Salisbury Cathedral this had the tallest spire in England. We’ll have workshops, sessions, and instruments. We are delighted to have Gaby Bultmann from Berlin as our international guest.
On 15th, after a morning tour of the local pipe and tabor iconography, our Symposium in Grantham House will be inspired by the historic chained library. There will be a session in the evening.
On 16th we will workshop, then process and perform with morris and Grantham Danserye before a Concert at St Wulfrum’s Church Celebrating Pipe and Tabor, with international artist Gaby Bultmann from Berlin.
There’s more taboring fun on 17th before fond farewells in the afternoon.
Workshops will include Gaby Bultmann on baroque style and ornaments (bring G pipes for this, or email Andy Richards asking to borrow one).
